GUARDIAN CLASS CHANGES

When we first started to look at the Guardian we went through feedback from the community and compiled lists of what the players did and did not like. We decided to do it a bit differently this time around by not introducing any big changes to the Guardian’s playstyle.

One thing we saw from the feedback gathered was that the Juggernaut feat tree was clearly inferior to that of the Tempest in the eyes of the community. While these trees still are centered on different weapons, we wanted the Juggernaut tree to be a more viable choice for Guardians. The tree should be able to have a similar threat potential in groups as a Tempest, and it should also offer a viable build for PvP.

A few examples of the things we have changed :

Stratagems, Tactics and Maneuvers have undergone a change. We decided to reduce the amount of these abilities, while making the remaining abilities more interesting.

* Stratagems have been removed from the game.
* Tactics are still a lasting choice, but keep the positive effects from the old maneuvers.
* Maneuvers are now short term abilities that grant a bigger bonus.

While using these maneuvers the guardian will now also gain the Recently Used Maneuver effect that can be enhanced by two new feats.

Bloody Vengeance

Bloody Vengeance has been changed into an innate combo. Since the combo was designed for both types of weapons we chose to move it out from the feat trees. It will now gain a smaller buff from the Vengeance counter, and will also consume the entire counter when used.

Juggernaut

New Feats :
* Shield Mastery and Improved Shield Mastery. Shield Mastery grants the player two new combos, Shield Strike and Shield Slam, while the Improved Shield Mastery improves these. Shield Strike is a stun combo. This is improved by lowering the cooldown of the combo. Shield Slam is a combo that does low damage, while generating a high amount of threat. This is improved by further increasing the threat produced.
* Brutal Opening – This feat gives The Overreach, Dulling Blow, Guard Destroyer, and Counterstrike combos a higher change of a critical hit on the starter move.
* Savage Strikes – This feat grants the Guardian Combat Rating while the Recently Used Maneuver spell is active.
* Ability – Maneuver: Wall of Steel – This maneuver gives the guardian increased evade chance for a short time.
* Call to Arms – Grants the guardian a higher amount of hate generated when active, while the team gains a boost to their damage.
* Ability – Powerhouse – This ability increases the guardian’s Weapon Damage and Critical Rating. While this effect is active the guardian’s critical hits will also increase his Critical Bonus Damage for a short time.

Feat Changes :
* Savage Counterstrike – Increase to the retaliatory damage of Counterstrike has been changed to 5/10/15/20/25 %. Up from 2/4/6/8/10.
* Battle Cry and Ardent Battle – The stamina regain effect from this ability will now tick 4 times. Up from 3.
* Morale Boost – Increased the team effect of stamina drained by Plexus Strike.
* Cry of Havoc – Cry of Havoc has been moved further into the tree. This ability now gives a lot more threat when additional ranks are feated.
* Brutal Overreach – This feat grants an ability that gives your next Overreach higher damage, and a higher chance of hitting critically.
* Brutal Blows – The Critical Chance has been increased to 5%. Up from 2.5%. Now also includes the Dulling Blow and Overreach combo lines.
* Stand Your Ground – The Stand Your Ground ability now allows guardians to knock back full plate targets, while also making them immune to such knock backs for a short period of time. The snare component has been removed.
* Improved Dulling Blow – The duration of the Evade Chance effect has been increased to match the debuff effect of the Dulling Blow combo.
* Titanic Smash – Titanic Smash has been changed to be a high damage combo. It also has an increased chance to perform critical hits.
* Juggernaut – Juggernaut is now a purely defensive ability. While active it grants the user CC resistances, Armor, Protection, and a small amount of health.

Feats Removed :
– Bloody Vengeance – Bloody Vengeance has been changed to an innate combo. This is granted at level 50. (See below for more details on this).
– Forced March
– Drive them Back
– Sacrifice
– Bleeding Counterstrike
– Bleeding Dulling Blow

Tempest

New Feats :
* Ability – Intimidating Shout. This ability places a bleed effect on the guardian’s target.
* Mental Guard. This feat gives the Guard combo line bonus protection in addition to the armor it already gives.
* Precise Attacks – This feat grants the guardian Armor Penetration while the Recently Used Maneuver spell is active.
* Ability – Maneuver: Enduring Regeneration – This new Maneuver is available at level 40, and gives the guardian back some stamina for the duration.
* Fatal Strikes – This feat gives 1% Critical Bonus Damage per rank.

Feat Changes :
* Disarming Aggression – Damage gained increased to 4/8/12%. Up from 3/6/9%. Hate Reduction increased to 10/20/30%. Up from 10/18/25%.
* Skewer – Further ranks of this feat will now increase the duration of the Skewered effect by 1.5 and 3 seconds.
* Defiance – Defiance will now do 2 ticks for 5% of the Guardian’s health. Up from 4 ticks of 2%.
* Vengeance is Mine – Vengeance is Mine will now also have a 10% chance per rank of triggering the Vengeance effect when the guardian does a critical hit.
* Lightning Reflexes – This feat will now give 5% Evade Chance increase passively. Up from 2.5%. The ability will now also include Overwhelming Shout in the list of cooldowns it resets.
* Sweep the Field – Feat changed to be 2 points. Down from 3. This combo now increases the distance the Stagger combo line knocks back a target.

Feats Removed :
– Eye for an Eye
– Bleeding Revenge
– Redoubt
– Combat Mastery Stratagem

Combo Changes

* Storm Strike – Storm Strike has had it’s cooldown lowered, and now also has an increased chance of critically hitting the target.
* Riposte – When the guardian has the combo Riposte trained he will now see a particle effect played when he evades.
* Overreach – Two new ranks of Overreach are now given out at levels 44 and 68.
* Bloody Vengeance – Bloody Vengeance is now innate at level 50, and still usable by both classes. The animations have changed so that pole arm and sword and shield will be closer to each other in damage. Bloody Vengeance will now consume the guardian’s Vengeance Stack. Gains from the Vengeance stack have been reduced.
* Counterstrike – The retaliatory damage done by Counterstrike has been increased. Additionally any targets that were not hit by the original combo will still be hit by a lower amount of retaliatory damage when hitting the guardian.
* Guard – The amount of Armor gained while the Guarded effect is active has been slightly lowered when using lower ranks of this combo.
* Disable – Disable will now in addition increase the guardians Fatality Chance for a short time after being used.
* Dulling Blow – Dulling Blow now decreases the targets Hit Rating instead of Combat Rating.
* Strike and Guard – Removed the Stun from this combo. The stun is now utilized by the combo Shield Strike. Increased the Damage Deflection gained when the effect from this combo is active.
* Plexus Strike – Increased the stamina drained.

Ability Changes

* Stratagems – The Stratagems have been removed from the Game
* Maneuvers – Old Maneuvers have been renamed to Tactics, and the negative effects have been removed. These now give +mitigation/+hate/+damage

Tactics
* Old Tactics have been renamed to Maneuvers
* These are now short term clickables, also with no negative effects.
* Maneuver: Elusive Daring and Maneuver: Mental Barrier are innate and granted at level 40
* Maneuver: Wall of Steel can be feated in the Juggernaut Tree at level 40.
* Maneuver: Enduring Regeneration can be feated in the Tempest Tree at level 40.
* While any Maneuver is active the guardian also receives the Recently Used Maneuver spell. This can be further increased by Hurting Strikes in the Juggernaut Tree, and Precise Attacks in the Tempest Tree.

Reckoning
* Reckoning is now an ability that affects the outcome of the guardian’s next pole arm combo.
* This ability can be activated at any time, and will only go on cooldown when used by a combo. (1 second cooldown on activating to prevent double clicking.)
* Combos gain the following effects :
– Flashing Arc: Increased damage
– Disable: Disable will now give the guardian back an amount of the stamina sapped from the target.
– Guard: Big amount of Armor removed after one hit.
– Storm Strike: Increased damage, and increased radius of hit.
– Stagger: Allows Stagger to knock back heavier targets.
– Riposte: Increases the guardians Evade Chance for a short amount of time.
– Skewer: Decreases the cooldown of skewer"

1.28.5 Release Notes

The folks at Battleground Europe: WWII Online have published the patch notes for their most recent update which added 26 new towns, 3 new brigade types, and many more game improvements.

You guys have been pretty good sports putting up with the intermission all week and it looks like were ready to reward your patience. Those of you keeping score probably figured that 1.28 was long over and we were moving on to 1.29. Well, so did we, but…

We had been working on a bunch of game play changes that have all sort of piled up and they really want to be released so here we are. 1.29 is still in development as is the Unity II code base. While we wait for them, we have a few things that we are going to deploy to the live server. These are pretty major actually and they warrant a little live time before a campaign. Fear not however, this will not be your regular intermission, as you will see below. Enough of my rambling, here’s the beef.

IGN’s Exhaustive Community Q

IGN wasn’t kidding when they said they would be taking questions from the community straight to the folks at BioWare, and the results are in. The resulting Q&A numbers 4 pages in length, and contains an assortment of new information and hints. Fielding the questions are senior content producer Dallas Dickinson from BioWare Austin, and Jake Neri, producer at LucasArts.

Some stand-outs below:

On healing:

IGN: A lot of people wanted to know about the healing system. Will The Old Republic use a trinity system; the tank, healer, and the DPS class. Will the healer play a massive role, or will groups be able to go with no healing?

Dallas Dickinson: We want to make sure that we have many, many MMO roles filled there, but it’s really important to us that players are able to actually play their experience either as a group or as a solo. So there are a number of ways that healing comes into the game. Several of our classes have healing branches that they can follow that will have some specific healing powers, but we don’t want to make it a requirement for the base core game. That said, you’re obviously going to be better off, especially when you get into higher-level stuff and into PvP, if you have healers on your side.

Jake Neri: I think we have a unique sort of twist on how healing works. I don’t think we’re speaking in total detail about it, but I think the people will be excited for it, and it’s definitely a unique function of our game.

On space, and customization:

IGN: This is from Mitchell in Texas. I would like to know if you guys are implementing space combat. There are a lot of people asking about space combat, and what type of combat will it be? Will there be dogfights, capital ships? And he says I want to feel like a Star Wars adventurer in the fray, not just another Boba Fett lookalike. Do you guys plan on allowing the player to customize their weapon, armor, and body features with a lot of variety.

Dallas Dickinson: The first one is that we’re not talking about space combat yet. The second one is absolutely. We know that customization is a key to MMOs. It’s one of the things that players strive for. It’s one of the things that makes your gameplay experience unique. Throughout your characters life you’re going to be able to find upgrades, you’re going to be able to find some custom equipment, so that you will look different, you will feel different. People will be able to identify you by your achievements because they’ll say, "Holy cow, you have that helmet. You must have completed this part of the game!" And it’ll be a badge of honor.

Some other things covered include the issue of balance between force-wielding and non-force wielding classes, the possibility of player bounties, and more. But mostly, the answers were relatively thin on questions not involving what appears to be the focus for The Old Republic’s marketing at the moment: the story.

Comic Con Interview

MMORPG.com’s Carolyn Koh recently attended the San Diego Comic Con. While there, she had the opportunity to speak with Alexander Freed and Dallas Dickinson of BioWare about the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The time period of Star Wars: The Old Republic was chosen as deliberately as that of Knights of the Old Republic. Set 3,000 years before Darth Vader and 300 years after KotOR, Bioware is able to move around in the time line while keeping the continuity of the Star Wars expanded universe in mind as they write their story.

"Being set in a new time period, we can use the content to weave a new story," said Alexander Freed. "We are telling the story of the origins of the Sith Empire." A different empire than the one of KotOR or the one run by Emperor Palpatine, in SWTOR, the gamer will see the different strata of the Sith Empire; the slaves, the imperial families, the regular middle class, the conquered planets, and of course the upper echelon, the Sith themselves.

Taris in The Old Republic?

Taris, the planet you begin your adventure on in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, may also be a location in The Old Republic. The Darth Hater blog has come upon a telling screen grab of dialogue from the recently released video documentary that reads: "Taris is a dangerous place. What are you doing here?"

Credit goes to Mfavila from the official Star Wars: The Old Republic forums for the keen-eye.

Anyone else excited to possibly see Taris 300+ years later?

Dice Rolls in Multiplayer Dialogue?

One issue that has many fans wondering is how Star Wars: The Old Republic will be handling their "interactive dialogue system" aka multiplayer dialogue. Who speaks? When? How do I stop someone from griefing my story? These are all questions that come up when contemplating this feature. While it is unique to say the least, it’s obviously also a can of worms.

The latest video documentary for The Old Republic focusing on the voice-over on the game may give us some clues as to how this system will work.

A blog following The Old Republic known as "Darth Hater" has gone and dissected the latest video documentary, and among all the little tidbits of information one in particular stood out: when two players are involved in a dialogue there are apparently dice rolls going on alongside the character portraits in the group window.

This leads the blogger, as well as myself, to wonder: Will dice rolls be handling who speaks in a group dialogue situation?

What do you make of it? Let us know in the comments.

Video Documentary #3: Voices of SW: TOR

A new video documentary is now available on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website. The new video doc focuses on the voice acting in the game, featuring in-game footage of the conversations of the game and interactions the player can have with the NPCs in the game.

All characters, NPCs, companion characters, even the player character will be fully voiced in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The result of this? Thousands of speaking roles, and hundreds of thousands of voiced lines of dialogue.

Also in the documentary is entirely new gameplay footage, including glimpses of the UI, and a healthy dosage of combat footage.

The developers also make note of the interactive dialogue system which will take into account other players accompanying you and tweak the storyline based on the classes present.

Developer Blog #10

In this latest dev blog on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website, we’re given a peek into the process behind the massive undertaking that is committing to full voice-over in The Old Republic.

The blog gives us some backstory to the concept of including  full voice over in the game by giving us a peek at  what is essentially a phone log discussing the idea. Of course, just as most of us thought when we heard the idea, the guys behind the game thought it was just as crazy.

Nevertheless, both BioWare and LucasArts are committed to this and the general process involves BioWare writing out the scripts and the guys at LucasArts doing the recording.

The game is described as having enough voice-over to span ten KOTOR’s. Voicework is recorded in at least five cities, they’ve worked with hundreds of actors so far, and there is over 40+ novels of content. They say the hardest part of it all is maintaining consistency. For example, there are many ways to pronounce "Thul" or "Holo" projector, and so they have maintained an audio pronunciation guide to help with that.

Mythic to Assist in Development

According to an interview with Dr. Greg Zeschuk at Eurogamer, Mythic will definitely assist BioWare in the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic:

"I think we always have lots of opinions to share, Ray and I," said Zeschuk in an interview published today. "We’ve both played Warhammer, and actually I’ve still been playing it on and off for a while, so I think for us it’s not to much a popularity boost as just the fact that we can probably bring perspectives to the table that will be new and perhaps helpful to the guys from Mythic in the same way from an online perspective they can certainly share with us.

"To give credit to the Austin team [making Star Wars: The Old Republic], we have a number of serious MMO veterans on there, so it’s certainly not neophytes, but there’s absolutely opportunities to share and learn things back and forth."

How do you think this partnership will affect the development of both Warhammer Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic? Let us know in the comments!

The Return of the Mandalorians

Lance Henriksen, an actor famed for his role as Bishop in the Alien franchise films, reprises his role as Keeper of the Jedi Archives in this latest holorecord entry on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic website.

The new entry, entitled The Return of the Mandalorians, details the renewed role of the Mandalorians in the war between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic. The resurgence of Mandalorian involvement in the conflict is marked by the ascension of a young warrior from the Gladatorial arenas of Geonosis as the new Mandalore.

The new Mandalore has organized a large army to challenge the Jedi Order, and their recent blockade of Republic supplies along the Hydian Way supply route served as a major setback to the Galactic Republic, who, up until now had been experiencing some momentum in the conflict.

Though the Jedi fleet that had been dispatched  to deal with the Mandalorian blockade was defeated, they were fortunate enough to be rescued by smugglers who did indeed break up the blockade. Where the Mandalorians will turn up next is anyone’s guess, but what is clear is that they are here to stay.

Twelve Possible Classes

MMORPG.com’s Michael Bitton writes this week’s list with a rundown of twelve different classes that could be included in BioWare’s upcoming MMORPG, Star Wars: the Old Republic.

The hype-level for Star Wars: The Old Republic is through the roof and some might consider this curious. After all, according to an article on Kotaku, our most accurate timeframe for a release is "less than a decade," but that hasn’t stopped skeptics and fans alike from speculating wildly about the game.

Of course, one of the most contentious issues is that of the classes to be featured in The Old Republic. The developers at BioWare have stated that they want fans of Star Wars at every level to be able to recognize and much more importantly, identify, with the available classes in the game. Indeed, the most recent class unveilings have easily recognizable analogues to characters from the films, and BioWare hasn’t been shy about the fact these analogues played an important role in determining the implementation of the game’s classes. The problem then, is this: there are five classes left to officially reveal (we know Jedi and Sith are coming, come on) but there aren’t many "classes" in the films that would make sense while also filling out important roles in gameplay. This isn’t to say that BioWare will only stick to the films for their class choices, I do definitely think they will both pull from their own previous Star Wars games, other existing Star Wars games, and of course the Expanded Universe. But there is a definite sense they are going for the "iconic" classes where possible.

E3 2009 Preview

We saw Star Wars: The Old Republic at E3 and now we bring you our impressions of this upcoming Bioware MMO, as well as a video interview with Executive Producer Tom Nichols.

“No one has made [story] the central pillar of the game as we have,” explained Senior Producer Dallas Dickenson during their lavish E3 presentation. “Story drives choice and choice drives action.”

The Old Republic looks and feels far more like a single player RPG than an MMO. The quests they showed could have been straight out of Mass Effect. They were fully voice acted – in fact the entirety of The Old Republic is voiced – and cinematic in nature. This includes the player character, who responds with a dialogue wheel, virtually identical to the on Bioware used in Mass Effect.

Dev Discussion – Hypothetical – Control

James Casey brings us a new Hypothetical Discussion on the Dev Boards. This discussion is a little bit different than the usual discussions:

“This is going to be a bit unusual of a dev discussion. We were asked to get some feedback on control schemes and naturally I thought of our forums and our players. To that end, I’ve put together a list of questions to see how you, as a Warhammer Online player, interact with, control, and target in our game. When answering these questions, concentrate on how you play our game currently. I’ll list a few examples, but don’t consider that list exhaustive, if you use different keys or methods, let us know. Also, if you use mods in conjunction with any of the below, list them. …”

To read the questions and the rest of the discussion, please visit theOfficial WAR Forums. Afterwards, come back and join in on the discussion on ourVN Forum!Ā |Ā Ā |Ā Send To FriendĀ |Ā

Dev Discussion – Hypothetical – Crafting

James Casey brings another Hypothetical Discussion to the Dev Discussion Board, this one about Crafting.

“This time around I want to talk about something a bit hypothetical. We’ve talked about how we have some plans for crafting in the future (later this year) but we want to get some feedback from the players first on the current crafting system.

To that end, here are some questions to answer.

What is your favorite aspect of the current crafting system?
What do you consider the most useful item(s) that can be produced in the current crafting system? …”

To continue reading the questions and the discussions, please visit the BioWare MythicOfficial WAR Forums, and then head back to ourVN Forum boardsto discuss it with us!
