Neverwinter Nights

Developer: Atari
Category:
Released on Jun 16, 2002

Neverwinter Nights is one of those exceedingly rare games that has a lot to offer virtually everyone, even if they aren’t already into RPGs.

You might think that a game like Neverwinter Nights probably isn’t very healthy for the gaming industry. After all, this is the sort of game you could easily play for months or even longer. Simply put, once you get into Neverwinter Nights, you’ll likely have no need or desire to play another role-playing game for a long time–or any other game for that matter. And while that’s unfortunate for any game trying to compete, it’s certainly a good thing as far as most gamers should be concerned. They’ll find that Neverwinter Nights is indeed the end-all, be-all Dungeons & Dragons RPG that it’s been touted to be for the last several years.

About GameStreet Talk

Free Voice Chat and Instant Messaging with GameStreet Talk™

GameStreet Talk™ is a free voice chat and instant messaging program similar toVentriloandTeamSpeak. Also called "GSTalk", the free client program installs minimally on your system and runs in the system tray and allows you to create unlimited personal voice channels. Guilds can also create their own private channels that only their members can use. On top of this is an instant messaging system similar toAOL Instant MessengerandWindows Live Messengerthat allows you to send instant messages to your friends. Read further for more info about these features.

Contacts and Instant Messaging

GameStreet Talk allows users to build a contact list from their friends on GameStreet, or any other member of the website. From this list you can send instant messages, and invite friends to join your voice channels. Once a member is in your contact list, his or her own voice channels become visible to you so you can join them if they have given you access.

Voice Conferencing for Members

Each member can create "Channels" for voice conferences. Each user has an unlimited number of channels they can create for any purpose. Each channel can be setup to allow any of your contact’s to use it, require a password, or you can selectively choose which contacts can use it. You can also browse your contact’s channels and use them as well, if that person have given you access to them.

**Each member can support up to 20 concurrent users across all his/her channels at any given time (Each member is given this 20 user limit across all of his/her personal channels). Member account upgrades can be purchased to support more concurrent users at one time.

Voice Conferencing For Guilds

Guilds who are registered on GameStreet can also create an unlimited number of guild-specific channels that only their members can use. Each channel can be setup by an admin or officer, and can be setup to allow all members to use, require a password, or be used by admins/officers only. Only members of the guild will be able to see these channels and use to them.

**Guilds can support up to 20 concurrent users across all guild channels at any given time. Guild account upgrades can be purchased to support more concurrent users at one time.

Voice Quality and Performance

Testing has shown a far superior voice quality toTeamSpeak, and is equivalent if not better quality thanVentrilo. Average usage of GS Talk requires a very minimal memory footprint (25-50mb), and uses about 600-15000 bytes per second of bandwidth when in a channel.

The Bottom Line

GameStreet Talk is completely free to use and does not require a server to host. All users connect to the central GS Talk server infrastructure and can communicate with any other member of GameStreet. The basic service is completely free, but upgrades are available to increase capacity for concurrent users for a member’s or guild’s channel space. GameStreet Talk is supported by ads shown unobtrusively in the client, but does not include any spyware or adware.

System Requirements

– Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Higher), Windows Vista and Windows 7

Stop! Before You Download!

For Windows XP Users Only, GameStreet Talk requires theMicrosoft .NET Framework 3.0. This must be installed either throughWindows Update, or manually downloaded and installed from theMicrosoft .NET Framework 3.0 Download Page. Please do this first before you install GS Talk.

GameStreet – Lord of the Rings Online News

News

I know I said I was leaving, but this news is too big not to post. Press release below, if you’re interested.

How do you think free-to-play LOTRO will work out? I’m not so sure it’s a good idea. One of the things that makes free-to-play DDO work is that quests all have multiple difficulties, which means you can repeat single quests over and over again. If you don’t repeat quests, you’re more or less forced to pay if you want to reach much above level 4 — once you get to that point, you’ll find that leveling becomes difficult as a free player, as so much of the game is locked behind a pay wall. Without repeatable quests, LOTRO will struggle to emulate the DDO model.

Further, LOTRO’s strength has been its community, and I really question the effect this will have on our current community.

Let me know what you think. Click that comments link and post.

Update: The e-mail I received from Turbine’s PR agency notes that LOTRO f2p will be playable at E3. While I’m not attending, I’ll try to get information for you from the Vault folks who are.]

WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES THE LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE™

Community Interview #1

Reakktor Media’s inaugural issue of their new Community Q&A series for Black Prophecy is now available. The first issue introduces us to Reakktor Media CEO Kirk Lenke, and Development Director Simon Bachmann.

While the interview consists mostly of introductory-themed questions, there is some beef:

Chris: Lots of players would like to see the possibility to walk around space stations with their characters but as we have previously explained this feature will not be included in the final release of Black Prophecy. Could you explain to our community what the technical requirements and possible difficulties would be to realize this feature?

Kirk: The difficulties are not only of a technical nature but also a matter of budget which does not allow us to implement everything that is technically possible at the current time. I have hopes that we will be able to realize this and other features in one of the planned add-ons after release.

Simon: Like Kirk already explained, it is less of a technical problem and more of a budget/time problem. We have, like most projects in the game industry, a pre-defined budget. When we developed the game design we had to consider what we would be able to implement within the given general framework and in the end we decided to do one thing properly and focus on the combat aspect with space ships. From a graphical point of view especially, station walking would have been a tremendously large effort and if we had taken on both features at the same time it would have been necessary to split up the available resources. Other parts of the game would then have suffered as a result.

Nonetheless the station walking feature is something we all would like to see in the game and in an add-on this would definitely receive a high priority. It is quite important for us to implement meaningful content and simply implementing station walking would not be enough as such a feature has to be a meaningful addition to the gameplay. If you think this concept through, you could quickly end up with an almost separate game. But you can be sure that these are not the only cool ideas we have up our sleeves for further development of Black Prophecy.

Community Bulletin

The folks at Reakktor media has published the latest community bulletin for Black Prophecy, updating players on the game’s development.

As you can see from the news summary we released three new high resolution screenshots of player cockpits on which the response was simply overwhelming. Many people thought that these were concept art because of the high quality but I can ensure you that they are real in-game shots. For me these cockpits definitely bring back good ol’ Wing Commander memories and I am sure that you won’t ever want to leave those cockpits once you’ve climbed into them in the final game.

In an attempt to inspire your creativity the Archive of the Preservers forums have been installed. In these forums you can publish self-created fan art, be it graphics, drawings, music or written content. Of course you can also discuss the creation process itself, e.g. talk about drawing techniques or writing styles. Please read the introduction thread carefully as it contains the rules for publishing self-created fan art. From what I have seen so far we have lots of creative people in our community and it’s quite a pleasure to watch your progress in creating fan art. For those who wonder about the name of the forum, the name was inspired by the Church of Preservers which was found by Silpha Uranir in 2420 (Exon 275) according to the timeline.

Community Bulletin

Reakktor Media has posted the second issue of the Black Prophecy Community Bulletin, where they talk about community matters, press interviews, and the search for a publishing deal.

The last two weeks have been quite busy again. While the dev team is making good progress with the game, our management is continuing the negotiations with several publishers who are very interested in a cooperation with us. We still cannot state any names yet but we are confident to be able to provide more information in the next weeks. In addition, some of our team members faced the games press in several interviews giving a little more insight into Black Prophecy.

We are also very delighted to see the community growing and flourishing. None of us has expected to see so many people from all over the world in our forums discussing Black Prophecy and having a good time together. This makes us confident that we are on the right way to make Black Prophecy a great game for every one of you.

Introductory Q

Kirk Lenke, the CEO of Reakktor Media, takes a few moments to answer Jon Wood’s general questions about the upcoming sci-fi MMO.

MMORPG.com:

What can you tell us about Black Prophecy?

Kirk Lenke:

Black Prophecy is a fast-paced 3D space MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) with state-of-the art graphics and thrilling real-time combat. In contrast to competing games, we are focussing on exciting PvE and PvP game content that players can experience without investing excessive amounts of time. Thus our target audience is definitely the casual gamer who wants to jump into the cockpit in his leisure time and take on the numerous challenges of the Black Prophecy universe, alone or together with his friends.

Like in our previous MMORPGs Neocron and Neocron 2 we are striving once more to offer a breathtaking atmosphere and have spared no expense or effort, even going so far as to engage a professional author to achieve this effect. Black Prophecy setting and story have been created by the award-winning sci-fi author Michael Marrak, who carries the player off into a complex and vibrant universe full of epic conflicts.
