Why Make a TwelveSky 2?

In this new developer journal, the Sang Chan Lee from Gigasoft answer the question "Why Make a TwelveSky 2 sos oon after releasing TwelveSky 1?"

Hello! My name is Sang Chan Lee, and I’m the Head of Marketing and Project Operations for Gigassoft Co., Ltd, the development studio behind such games as "TwelveSky 2" and a few other unannounced projects. Gigassoft was founded in December of 2002 with the purpose to make compelling Massively Multiplayer Online Role Play Games. Our first project, "TwelveSky [1]", went into Alpha testing in late 2003. Following its success, we began working on a sequel, "TwelveSky 2", which entered into its live phase in South Korea in March of 2008. With the game still relatively new, it’ll be released in Europe, China, and Japan almost simultaneously. That’s quite a feat for any online game company!

Riding on the back of "TwelveSky [1]"’s success, we are now one of the biggest independent game studios in South Korea. Our strength lies with our ability to do every bit of game production ourselves – from 3D animation, programming, all the way to sound effects and music scores. That’s quite rare over here! In addition, we even have in-house resources to manage our own Live Operations in Korea such as Customer Service. All these in-house capabilities have allowed us to be much closer to our valued players and understand their needs better. This is the winning formula behind the success of "Twelvesky 2" in regions where the game has been released.

Medal of Honor: LE, the BF3 Beta, and You

Since the build up for Battlefield 3 is happening and the Beta is coming up in September, I thought it would be a good idea to ask EA a little about how if you own Medal of Honor: LE, what you should do.

Q1: So with all the recent BF3 Alpha testing news, some are wondering about the upcoming beta. If someone had bought Medal of Honor:LE with the beta invite inside, when would they start hearing about the BF3 Beta?

A1:The Open Beta will start in September. The exact date for when Medal of Honor: Limited Edition players can join the Beta will be announced at a later date.

Q2: Is there anything that those with the Medal of Honor:LE should do in preparation for the beta in September? For instance register their game atwww.ea.comorgunclub.ea.com

A2: If you purchased a copy of Medal of Honor with the Battlefield 3 Beta sticker on it, you are eligible for the Beta. If you have not received the newsletter, make sure you opt in on your EA Profile to receive them. Also, if you haven´t received the newsletter and own a copy of Medal of Honor: Limited edition, you are eligible to play in the beta.*
*Not second-hand copies

You can also check out some more questions and answers about the Battlefield 3 Alpha and Beta at theBattlefield Blog

Want to say thanks to @Seeson for taking some time to answer my questions about the Medal of Honor: LE, the BF3 Beta, and You!

Today, Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer at Danger Close, announced on theMedal of Honor Blogthat they are in fact working on the sequel to Medal of Honor.

Yes, Danger Close is currently working on the next Medal of Honor.

Just recently, EA announced that the reboot of Medal of Honor was a big success with over 5 million copies sold. We would especially like to thank all of the long time Medal of Honor fans out there who have stuck with us over the years.

Rumor: Frostbite 2 being used for Medal of Honor 2?

Well nothing has officially been said whether or not Danger Close Games is making a second Medal of Honor, a job listing on theEA Jobs Sitemakes reference to the development of a new game, could it be Medal of Honor 2?

Here’s what the job listing says:

Level Designer, Danger Close Team

Danger Close needs fire support. Danger Close Games, an innovative new studio within Electronic Arts, has one goal: make the best shooters in the market. Having recently released the successful reboot of “Medal of Honor,” Danger Close Games is looking for exceptional individuals to fill out its team of world class designers, engineers and artists.

Do you want to be Danger Close?

Position Summary:
EA Los Angeles is looking for an experienced Level Designer to work on an unannounced First Person Shooter game with strong multiplayer focus. The Level Designers play a very important role in game development, creating memorable environments and gameplay elements to satisfy an increasing sophisticated and widening games audience. They need to be inventive and understand the design factors that contribute to an entertaining and absorbing gameplay experience. The Level Designer will be working from the overall game design documentation, designing a portion of the game specifying all the possible actions and gameplay events that take place within that level. The Level Designer will also design the level environment, including locations and general layout of the spaces within the level, contributing thoughts about visuals (e. g. lighting, textures, and forms), the characters and objects involved, and specific behaviors associated with the characters and objects.

Responsibilities:
•Carry a multiplayer level from the first ideas and pen to paper concepts through playtesting and to the release of one of the largest first person shooter titles of the year.
•Work closely with artists to ensure the final product has an equal gameplay and visual qualities.
•Utilize cutting edge Frostbite 2 tool set and the collected knowledge of 7000 EA co-workers around the globe to deliver world class multiplayer levels.
•Imagine the position of the player and mapping out all the possibilities—logic and flow of events and actions, the conditions that need to be met for certain things to happen, and the gameplay that occurs as a result.

You read right, "Utilize cutting edge Frostbite 2 tool set…"

Could Medal of Honor 2 be using Frostbite 2? Could it be in development so shortly after Medal of Honor came out? Or is Danger Close working on a new title or IP?

We haven’t heard any real Medal of Honor news since before the New Year, so maybe they are.

Medal of Honor Paid DLC? Hot Zone…

A press release from earlier today has got me a bit worried. $10 for one gamemode and 2 maps? Personally, that’s $10 too much for something that should have been in the game already… Here’s the press release:

EA’s Multi-Platinum Hit Medal of Honor Expands with New Multiplayer Maps and Modes

LOS ANGELES, Oct 27, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced that the hit first-person shooter Medal of Honor(TM) will further expand its intense multiplayer experience with the release of an all-new multiplayer mode on November 2, 2010. The new mode called Hot Zone features "King of the Hill" gameplay where teams fight over a designated location on a map; the team who holds their position longest prevails. This adrenaline-fueled mode is playable across two all-new maps (Hindukush Pass and Korengal Outpost) as well as redesigned versions of the popular Shahikot Valley and Helmand Valley multiplayer maps. Hot Zone will be available via Xbox LIVE(TM) Marketplace for 800 MS points, on PlayStation(R)Network for $9.99USD and on PC exclusively via the EA Store(TM) for $9.99USD.

In addition to Hot Zone, EA will also release Clean Sweep on Nov 2 via Xbox LIVE, PSN and PC for free*. This free mode will also feature two all-new maps (Bagram Hangar and Khyber Caves) as well as redesigned versions of the popular Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins maps.

Well there you have it, the Clean Sweep DLC will be free and the "Hot Zone" will cost $10… |  | Send To Friend |

First Medal of Honor DLC

EA has announced today that not only did Medal of Honor sell 1.5 million copies in the first 5 days, but that Medal of Honor is getting it’s first Free DLC come November.

Medal of Honor Expands Award-Winning Multiplayer Experience with Free Download Pack

Medal of Honor Sells More Than 1.5 Million Units in First 5 Days

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), announced today that Medal of Honor™ has claimed the #1 chart position in the UK according to official GfK-ChartTrack data. In just five days since launching in the U.S. and with just two days of sales in Europe and Asia, the game has already sold through more than 1.5M units. EA also announced that the first-person shooter will expand with the release of an all-new explosive multiplayer mode on November 2, 2010. The free* multiplayer mode titled Clean Sweep is an elimination mode where players must rely on their own skill and teammates’ expertise to prevail as the winning team. This exhilarating mode is playable across two all-new maps (Bagram Hangar and Khyber Caves) as well as redesigned versions of the popular Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins maps. Clean Sweep will be available on November 2 via Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace and PlayStation®Network to owners of Medal of Honor with Online Pass.

Frank Gibeau, President at EA stated, “Medal of Honor is one of EA’s most storied franchises and we’re thrilled to see that fans worldwide have embraced it. In this ultra competitive category, Medal of Honor stands out from the pack. By portraying the Tier 1 Operator as so elite, so tough, Medal of Honor offers a view into a world that has the power to resonate with FPS gamers everywhere.”

Developed by DICE, Medal of Honor multiplayer delivers world-class First Person Shooter action and dedicated server support with all of the same authentic settings, weapons and realistic action depicted in the single-player game. For the first time in its 11-year history, Medal of Honor leaves the WWII theatre and enters the modern setting of war-torn Afghanistan. The game is told through the lens of a small band of fictional characters. Medal of Honor introduces players to the Tier 1 Operator, an elite warrior and relatively unknown instrument of the U.S. Military that operates under the National Command Authority to take on missions no one else can handle.

MoH PC Multiplayer Patch Update

Today it was announced that the PC would recieve it’s first patch, and it has!

Here are the details:

A PC patch for Medal of Honor’s multiplayer is coming today at around 1:30 PST. Check out the fix list below:
– Fixed a potential crash when using DirectX9 and switching kits/weapons
– When connecting with a non-PunkBuster client to a PunkBuster server, the game would get stuck in “Joining Game…” This has been fixed
– Server browser would sometimes remain blank for 60+ seconds after a full refresh. It should now begin displaying results immediately, under any circumstances
– Server browser supports multiple game servers running on the same host IP
– Server browser bugfixes for “Quick Refresh” operation
– Server browser is less prone to shuffling the order of entries
– Ping reporting in the server browser is more accurate (in a few cases ping values would get assigned to the wrong server)
– Full refresh no longer tracks the first server that arrives in the list
– When trying to join a full server, an error message is now displayed informing the user that the server is full
– Imported anti-cheat functionality

The update is only for changes to the multiplayer component of Medal of Honor. No single-player changes have been included. In order to update the game, you will need to quit Medal of Honor and load the game again. At that point the auto updater will download the update and apply it for you.

Steam users will need to update via Steam in the usual way.

So remember to restart your game, you also might have to go into the game’s folder ie (win 7 64bit): "C:Program Files (x86)Electronic ArtsMedal of HonorMP" and click on the file "mohmpupdater.exe" and you should be set.

DICE Developer Interview Series – MoH MP Devs

TheBattlefield Bloghas started an interview series over atDICE, the Multiplayer Developers of Medal of Honor, about certain developers history with DICE and game development.

First interview talked with Lars Gustavsson, starting Lead Designer for Medal of Honor:

Since then, you have worked on every major release of Battlefield. What was your initial reaction when you got the assignment to kick off development on the multiplayer mode for Medal of Honor together with Patrick Liu?
— I have always followed the series on PC throughout the years — historically as a competitor we wanted to outperform. To get the chance to actually work on it myself was exciting. I started by reading the book "Anaconda: Not a Good Day to Die", to study the environments and what was going on over there.

What did you want to achieve with the multiplayer mode?
— I knew that I wanted to take storytelling in the multiplayer mode to the next level. I was thinking "How do we make something that isn’t Battlefield, while still using the experience we have gathered throughout the years?" I wanted to make something different. Read the whole thing here…

The second interview in the series was with Patrick Liu, Multiplayer Producer on Medal of Honor:

Moving on to Medal of Honor, where you are the multiplayer Producer. What does that mean that you do?
— I am kind of the guy who points out the main direction and sets the high level vision for the whole experience. I don’t really plan everyone’s schedules or anything, rather I state what we should do, and then the lead designer performs the bulk of that work. I have also been heavily involved as a spokesperson for Medal of Honor [Like when Liu did 70 interviews in two days at our latest press event — Editor’s note]. My role is perhaps above all to bring the best out in my colleagues. To challenge them. So I’m perhaps not the most creative person if you count the number of gampelay ideas I churn out. It’s more the kind of thing where I immediately know a good idea when I see it.

What was that high level vision you set out to achieve?
— I knew we got the offer because of our track record with Battlefield. At the same time, I knew we didn’t want to make a Battlefield clone — that would just not make sense. So what could we do instead? Read the whole thing here…

Next interview is with Sebastian Armonioso, Lead Designer of Medal of Honor’s MP:

And after that came Medal of Honor. What did you think when you got the assignment to design the multiplayer for it?
— We didn’t want to simply reskin Battlefield and slap on the Medal of Honor logo, that was for sure. At the same time, we wanted to build on our own strengths. So what is it that we can do? Answer: We can build very well-balanced maps with lots of action. I remember thinking: "Can we get closer to Counter-Strike and Quake, while keeping that special DICE touch?"

Medal of Honor is much more focused on infantry than Battlefield. How come?
— Partly because this was not supposed to be Battlefield. Partly because the whole theme of Medal of Honor is these small infantry squads that operate in Afghanistan — they simply don’t have a lot of tanks or other vehicles down there. We also thought we had a good approach to the faster kind of infantry battles from working with Battlefield 1943, so we wanted to grab the chance to experiment some more with it, and take it further. Read the whole thing here…

Thanks to Scott over atPlanet Battlefieldfor the heads up on these.

Stay tuned here for more!

Fan Faire 2009 Player of the Year Winners

SOEhas announcedtheir 2009 Player of the Year winners. Below you’ll find the winners from EQ and EQ2, along with their entries.

From EQII:

Bownzer (alts: Bownz, Seelenschrei, Lazyone) from the Crushbone server!
You can see the entry made on his behalf at TheBrasse.com!

From EQ:

Palarran from The Tribunal server!

Palarran’s entry:

Gather ’round the fire my friends
To hear a tale of yore
By Karana’s hand, a druid began
He changed Norrath evermore

Palarran Taurina is of whom we speak
We’re here to tell of deeds
Big or small, he does them all
All you have to do is ask, and he helps fulfill your needs

In every guild there is dissension
No matter your faction, clique or friends
Love them, hate them or indifferent
With Palarran’s guiding hand and wisdom friction ends

Dragon kill points need to be updated?
Palarran is the man that toils away
Need help to get that flag?
Palarran is the man who’ll lend a hand, so that here you will stay

Who lives in a knothole in Tunare’s tree?
Palarran is the man and he goes meep, meep!
Our shining knight… oops druid
Palarran is here for keeps

Leaders come and leaders go
But Palarran’s mettle n’er becomes unfurled
A decade later, still playing together
(Rest in Peace) will rule the world

GU 52 Lore: A Rime of War

The folks at EverQuest II have revealed new lore behind the game’s upcoming Game Update 52.

A Rime of War
A dirge’s personal tale by Elna Tsernin

The waves rocking this vessel as we cross the Timorous Deep should be lulling me into a deep sleep, instead I find myself examining my actions and the tide of events that swept me here. I had been a successful dirge, and a beautiful one at that, I had always been proud of my unblemished scales and frills. A young Iksar blessed with talent beyond her years known throughout the Sebilisian Empire. I had been entertaining barons and officers with the same old collection of historical songs and tales of the Iksar nation for years; from Sebilis to Jinisk, Torsis to Charasis. When I had grown tired of those tales I looked toward the rest of Kunark. Over the next several years I trekked from one end of our isolated continent to the other learning tales of other societies and their myths. My native tongue was Sebilisian, like anyone born within the empire, but I learned enough common in these years in order to unlock stories from other cultures. But I was still young. A few stories of the drachnid learned here, a song about Chelsith there. I grew bored quickly, too quickly. Always believing the big song eluded me. Skorpikis, burynai, sarnak, Yha-Lei, even goblins. I was certain that I had heard all there was to hear and my catalog of songs and stories had become rather impressive, but I had been arrogant and foolish.

Collector’s Edition Tops Steam Sales

The Steam sales charts for the week of July 19th to July 25th are in. And who would have thought it? Pre-sales for the collector’s edition of Aion are numero uno:

Steam’s Top Ten (by Revenue) (7/19 – 7/25)

1. Aion Collector’s Edition (Pre-order) / NCsoft
2. Left 4 Dead / Valve
3. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition / LucasArts
4. Counter-Strike: Source / Valve
5. ARMA 2 / Bohemia Interactive
6. Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack / Telltale
7. Dawn of Discovery (ANNO 1404) / Related Designs
8. Street Fighter IV / Capcom
9. Team Fortress 2 / Valve
10. Killing Floor / Tripwire

Did you pre-purchase your collector’s edition copy on Steam? Let us know in the comments.

Personally, I find these figures curious. I can understand purchasing the regular copy digitally — but the collector’s edition? Don’t we pay extra for all the tangible goodies?

Paragus on Aion

Prolific MMORPG.com Blogger Paragus takes the time to give his full impressions thus far of NCsofts upcoming MMORPG, Aion.

Since my last article covering some of the basics of Aion at low level, I have had a chance to invest a bit more time in the Chinese version of the game. Having progressed far enough to see the Abyss finally, I wanted to take some time and give some updated impressions on my play experiences since I am a bit farther into the game.

The Grind

The first thing I want to touch on are my experiences with the grind in the game so far. From levels 1-20, I can say that I was pretty much able to quest through most of my levels. The campaign quests give a substantial amount of EXP over the standard quests, and there are some repeatable quests to help you through some of those areas where you do find yourself grinding to reach the next level after your quests are all completed.

Between the levels of 20-24, the grind starts to pick up more and more each level. The percentage of your levels EXP you are able to get through quests starts to gradually go down in this range for a few reasons. The first is that the amount of exp to reach the next levels ramps up pretty quickly, and secondly, some of the quest EXP rewards don’t seem to be enough. The repeatable quests really don’t reward to well either, as one requiring you to kill X amount of mobs, rewards you at turn in with amount of exp equal to killing 2 of those mobs. In the time it takes you to go turn them in, you could have kept killing and came out better off. As a result, I spent a lot of my time grinding in the jungle and desert in Eltnen. Once reaching 25 however, things seem to pick up a lot (I’ll touch on this later).

Associate Producer Interview

MMORPG.com’s Jon Wood had a recent opportunity to ask the Aion team a number of questions about their upcoming game.

MMORPG.com:

There are those who say that Aion has the potential to be the much-foretold WoW Killer. What are your opinions on this?

Aion Team:

World of Warcraft has certainly changed the face of the MMO industry and has brought a new audience of players into the genre. That said, with Aion, our focus from the very beginning has been to create a fun and unique MMO that appeals to a global audience. We’re launching with an extremely polished game; with a ton of PvE content (over 1500 quests on day one); and we’re launching with a more western style of combat and gameplay. Combine those elements with Aion’s unique world and deep storyline, stunning visuals, and its innovative features such as flight and PvPvE, and I think you truly have an experience that will have broad global appeal. That being said, we’re very happy with the momentum we’ve seen building behind the game as we look toward its l

The Sights of Aion

MMORPG.com Correspondent Coordinator Vitaliy Dikker writes this report on the visuals in NCsoft’s upcoming MMORPG, Aion.

Aion is not just an amazing MMO… It is an incredibly beautiful game unlike any other I have seen before. The level of polish is remarkable and the game itself runs smoothly without any lag or visible glitches on an average system. I must say that I was blown away by the visual aspect of things immediately at character creation. As you can see in the screenshots, the amount of customization detail and options is staggering, but what is even more important is that these characters are stunningly modeled and animated in the game itself. I cannot even begin to imagine the time and resources that have been allocated to make the character models shine as much as they do.

Open Letter to the NCSoft Community

Lance Stites, Executive Producer at NCSoft West addresses the NCSoft community in an open letter today.

In the letter, Mr. Stites addresses some of the recent happenings with regards to their Exteel, Lineage II, and Aion properties. Mr. Stites also describes what we can expect from NCSoft going forward and especially with the upcoming launch of Aion this September.

I know that many fans are extremely anxious, impatient even, awaiting the release of Aion. I can assure you the team is fully engaged in the release of this product. We’ve got an army of creative writers generating an enormous amount of rewrites as we execute to our total commitment of quality of content. Our Localization Manager has vendors in place, keeping pace with the French and German translation. We’re actively recruiting an additional native German speaking localization Project Manager and have added QA Testers (native French and German speaking) to the Seattle office. We’ve got Voice Over recordings underway (of course for all three languages) and our PR and Marketing teams are releasing the hounds and you’ve likely seen the articles on class descriptions hit the internet. We also have tutorial videos in production, this should provide a great Aion first experience, both to novice and experience MMO players. We’ve shared details of our Collector’s Edition recently, our first public access beta event was very well received, and we’ll continue these events through our launch. We’ll have a flood of information in the upcoming days and invite you all to share the experience as Aion takes flight in North America and Europe this fall.

Blog Update: Aion Beta Weekend Review

Paragus is at it again, this time taking a break from his usual Darkfall-based blog post to give us his impressions of the Aion free trial weekend.

After my last entry about some of the upcoming MMOs, luck would have it that I was able to get a chance to play Aion during one of their recent beta preview weekend type events. Today I am going to try to give you my impressions from playing during the recent weekend event that had a level limit of 10, but did allow players to make characters from both of the game’s factions. While I will be the first to admit that 10 levels is hardly enough to review much of anything, but I think I got a chance to sample the game and take a look at various aspects that were present.

Just to recap quickly here before I get started, I went into this with a few preconceptions about the game in terms of graphics, polish, and whether or not the game would be bringing anything new to table. I have seen some pretty remarkable screenshots of the game, so graphically I set the bar pretty high. The game has also been out in a foreign market for a while, so I expected a fair amount of polish. In terms of innovations I approached Aion with fairly low expectations. As soon as the log-in screen popped up as seen above, I felt somewhat reaffirmed that graphically I would not be disappointed. So with all that being said, let’s get started!
